Commonly recommended sizes, last checked 31 October 2026. Platforms change their rules from time to time. If an upload is cropped or rejected, the platform's own help page is the final word. Design at the size shown, or at exactly twice it for sharper screens.

Why pictures get cropped.

  • Every platform has its own shape

Profile pictures are circles, covers are wide strips, and Stories run tall. One picture rarely fits all of them without a second version.

  • Keep the message in the middle

The edges are where apps draw buttons and where crops land. Text and logos belong in the middle.

  • Design a little bigger

Work at twice the size if you like, as long as the shape is the same. Platforms shrink the file, and screens look sharper.

  • Check the platform when it fails

Sizes change. If an upload is cropped or refused, the platform's own help page has the current rule.

About this tool.

Which Instagram size is best?

The portrait size of 1080 x 1350 pixels takes the most room in the feed and is a good default. Use 1080 x 1920 for Stories and Reels.

Why does my picture get cropped?

Each platform shows its own shape. Profile pictures are shown as circles, covers are wide strips, and the app can cover the top and bottom of a Story. Keep the message in the middle and away from the edges.

Should I design at twice the size?

It is a safe habit for sharper screens, as long as the shape (the ratio) stays the same. The platform will shrink it to what it needs.

How current is this list?

The sizes shown are commonly recommended and were last checked on the date at the bottom of the list. Platforms change them from time to time, so the platform's own help page is the final word.

What size should my WhatsApp profile picture be?

640 x 640 pixels is a good size. WhatsApp shows it as a circle, so keep the logo away from the corners. The profile picture maker on this site crops one for you.
