What size should the file be?

Pick what you are printing and get its size in millimetres, centimetres, inches and feet, the pixel size at your resolution, the bleed, and a blank template to design on. Printers differ, so treat it as the question to ask them, not the last word.

The tool

The common Indian size. Some printers cut 90 x 54 mm, so ask which they use before you design.

Resolution (dpi)

300 is the normal choice for cards and paper. Large flex and stands are read from a distance and are printed at 100 or less. Your printer will tell you what they need.

Four things printers ask.

  • The finished size

This is where the blade cuts. For a visiting card in India it is usually 3.5 x 2 inches, and some printers use 90 x 54 mm. Ask which.

  • The bleed

Run the background past the cut line by about 3 mm on small print, so no white edge shows if the blade drifts.

  • The safe area

Keep text and logos a few millimetres inside the cut line. The dotted line on the template shows it.

  • The resolution

300 dpi for things read in the hand. Large flex and stands are seen from a distance and are often printed at 100 dpi or less. Ask what your printer needs.

What size is a visiting card in India?

The common size is 3.5 x 2 inches (about 89 x 51 mm). Some printers cut 90 x 54 mm. Ask your printer which size they use before you design, because a few millimetres change the layout.

What is bleed, and how much do I need?

Bleed is artwork that runs past the cut line so no white edge shows if the blade drifts. Three millimetres on each side is the usual for cards, flyers and brochures. Large flex has different needs, so ask the printer.

What resolution should I use?

300 dpi is the normal choice for anything read in the hand. Large flex banners and roll-up stands are seen from a distance and are usually printed at 100 dpi or less at full size. Your printer will say what they need.

What is the safe area?

A margin inside the cut line where text and logos are kept, so they are not trimmed or crowded at the edge. The tool shows it as a dotted line on the template.

Can I use these templates in Canva or Photoshop?

The template is an SVG, which opens in Illustrator, Figma and Inkscape and imports into Canva. In Photoshop, create a new file with the pixel size shown at your chosen dpi.

Are the flex and standee sizes standard?

They are common trade sizes, not a standard. Printers differ in the sizes they stock and in how much margin they need for hems and eyelets, so confirm before you finish the artwork.
