Most customers who are happy never think of writing a review. They are not against it. Nobody asked, and it was not easy. So the whole job is to ask politely, at the right moment, and to make the step small. This guide shows how to do that for a shop, clinic, school, studio or service business in India.
Why reviews matter
When people search for a business near them, the Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see, and the stars and the words are what they read before they call. Reviews are also one of the signals that Google describes when it explains how local results are ordered, together with how close you are and how well your profile matches the search. That is a reason to build them honestly, and not a promise of any position.
Get the link first
Open your profile on a phone, find the option to share a review form, and copy the short link. Save it in your phone notes and in WhatsApp as a saved message. This link opens the review box directly, so a customer needs two taps. Without it, most people give up.
When and how to ask
| Moment | Why it works | What to say |
|---|---|---|
| Right after a good result | The feeling is fresh. | A short thank-you and the link, the same day. |
| At handover or delivery | The customer is looking at what you made. | Ask in person, then send the link while you are still talking. |
| After a kind message | They already said it is good. | 'That means a lot. Would you put it in a Google review? Here is the link.' |
| After a repeat order | They have chosen you twice. | Ask once. Do not ask at every order. |
| After a problem you solved | Fixing it well shows how you work. | Ask only if they seem happy with how it ended. |
A message you can send
Keep it short, in the language you usually use with the customer, and in your own voice. For example: 'Thank you for choosing us, Anita ji. If you were happy with the work, a short Google review would help other families find us. It takes a minute. Here is the link.' Then the link. Nothing else.
- Ask one person at a time. A copied broadcast to a long list looks like one and gets fewer replies.
- Say it is fine to write in Hindi or English. A review in the language a customer speaks reads as real.
- Do not tell people what to write, and do not offer a discount, a gift or any reward for a review.
- Ask everyone who was happy, not only the ones you expect to be kind. Choosing who to ask shapes the picture in a way that is not honest.
How to reply
Reply to every review, short and warm, within a few days. For a good review, thank the person by name and mention one real detail. For a poor one, thank them for telling you, say what you will look at, and offer a phone number or email to sort it out. Do not argue in public and do not copy the same reply under every review. Our review reply helper gives you a starting draft for each case.
What never to do
- Buy reviews, or ask friends and staff to write one about work they did not buy. Platforms remove them and the damage to trust is worse than no review.
- Give a reward in return for a review, or only for a five-star one.
- Ask a customer to remove a poor review in return for a favour.
- Write reviews for your own business or for a competitor.
- Set up a tablet at the counter that screens unhappy customers away from the review page. Doing this to hide poor feedback goes against Google's rules.
A simple weekly habit
Pick one day a week. List the customers whose work finished that week, send the link to each one who was happy, and reply to any new review. Ten minutes is enough for most small businesses. After a few months you will have a steady trickle, which looks more natural and is more useful than a burst once a year.
The review is only half of the profile. Keep the hours, phone and photos right too: our guide on claiming and completing a Google Business Profile walks through that, and the Google listing check shows what is missing. For the wider picture, see our local SEO checklist for Jaipur.
