Lockup
A lockup is a fixed arrangement of logo elements, such as a symbol with a wordmark, or a logo with a tagline or partner name. Its proportions and spacing are set once, so it is always used the same way and never rebuilt by hand.
In practice
What it means when you are the one making the decision.
Lockups matter wherever two identities meet: sponsorship, co-branding, sub-brands and events. A defined lockup prevents the logo being squeezed, rearranged or placed too close to another mark.
A good set of lockups covers the layouts people actually need, such as horizontal and stacked, with and without a tagline. They are drawn once by the designer and supplied as files, so nobody has to improvise in a hurry before a deadline.
Example
A festival sets up a lockup for its logo with the year, and another for the logo with a sponsor line, so every banner uses the same spacing.
