Brand and identity

Brand guidelines

Brand guidelines are a written set of rules for using a brand's identity: logo versions, colours, typography, imagery, layout and tone of voice. They let a team and its vendors produce consistent work without asking the original designer each time.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

Good guidelines are practical. They show the correct use and the common mistakes, give exact colour values and font names, and include templates for the jobs people actually do: a social post, a brochure, a presentation. A long document nobody opens is not a guideline.

Guidelines also protect the investment in the brand. When a printer, a franchisee or a new marketing hire can find the answer in minutes, the identity stays consistent as the business grows. Keep them current: a guideline that is five years out of date teaches the wrong thing.

Example

A multi-branch clinic gives each branch a one-page template for signage and a folder of approved logo files, so the fifth branch looks like the first.
