Typography system

A typography system is the chosen set of typefaces and the rules for using them: which font is for headlines and which for text, the sizes, weights, line spacing and alignment. It keeps written material consistent and readable across print and screens.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

Type carries as much personality as colour. A display typeface sets the character, while a text typeface does the quiet work of being readable at small sizes. Most systems use one or two families, with a clear scale, so the hierarchy is obvious without effort.

Licences matter. A typeface used on a website, in print and in an app may need different licences, and a free font can have limits on commercial use. A good system records which fonts are licensed for what, and supplies a fallback for places where the main font is not available.

Example

A brand uses a serif for headlines and a clean sans-serif for body text, with a defined size scale and a rule that headings never use more than two weights.
