Write the brief before the call.

Six short sections, in an order that makes the next one easier. Print it and write on the lines, or save it as a PDF and type into it. It works for any studio, ours included. Sending it to us is optional: you can also tell us in the form.

The brief

About the business

Start with what you would tell a stranger at a wedding. Plain words, no slogans.

  1. What does the business do, and for whom?

  2. How long has it been running, and where do you work?

City, regions, online or in person.

  3. What do customers say about you when you are not in the room?

Real words people use, good or bad.

Why now

A brief is easier to answer when it names the moment that made you write it.

  1. What has changed, or what is not working?

A launch, a new market, a site that does not bring enquiries, a brand that looks older than the business.

  2. What would a good result look like in twelve months?

A number if you have one, a sentence if you do not.

  3. What have you already tried?

The people you want to win

One person described well beats a demographic described loosely.

  1. Who is your best customer today?

  2. Who do you want more of?

  3. What do they compare you with before they decide?

Competitors, an in-house option, doing nothing.

What you think you need

Tick what applies, then say what you are unsure about. Not knowing is a fine answer.

  1. Which of these is closest? Logo and identity, website, social content, advertising, PR, something else.

  2. What must be finished first, and what can wait?

  3. What exists already?

Logo files, brand colours, photographs, website, social accounts, printed material.

References and taste

Three examples of anything you like, and one you dislike, tell a designer more than a page of adjectives.

  1. Three brands, sites or objects you admire, and what you admire in each.

  2. One you do not want to resemble, and why.

  3. Words that must not describe the brand.

Time, money and who decides

Honest numbers save everyone a round of emails.

  1. Is there a date this has to be ready by, and what is it tied to?

  2. What range have you set aside?

A range or a ceiling is enough. It helps us propose what fits.

  3. Who signs it off, and who else will have an opinion?

  4. Anything we should know that this page did not ask?
