Retargeting

Retargeting, also called remarketing, is showing ads to people who have already visited a website or interacted with a brand. Because they know the business, they are often more likely to return, but the approach must respect privacy rules and avoid being intrusive.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

It works by recording visits through a tag or a list of consenting contacts, then showing relevant ads on other sites and platforms. The strongest campaigns are specific: remind someone about the course they looked at, not a generic brand message.

Frequency should be capped, because seeing the same ad repeatedly turns interest into annoyance. Privacy laws and platform policies govern how audiences are built and used, so consent and clear notices matter.

Example

A visitor looks at a pricing page but does not enquire. Over the next week they see a short ad offering a free consultation, then the campaign stops.
