Responsive design

Responsive design is building a website so its layout, images and type adapt to the screen it is viewed on, from a small phone to a wide desktop. It uses flexible grids, scalable media and rules that change the layout at suitable widths.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

Most visits to many business sites happen on phones, so the small screen is a starting point and not an afterthought. Responsive design means text stays readable, tap targets are large enough, content order makes sense in one column and nothing needs sideways scrolling.

It also covers images and performance: serving smaller files to small screens, and loading only what is needed. Testing on real devices, not only a resized browser window, catches problems with touch, keyboards and slow connections.

Example

A pricing table that works as a wide grid on desktop becomes a stacked list on a phone, with the same information in a readable order.
