Brand and identity

Brand strategy

Brand strategy is the long-term plan for how a business wants to be perceived and chosen. It defines who the brand is for, what it promises, why people should believe it and how it should sound, so every design and marketing decision has something to be measured against.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

A useful strategy is short enough to remember and specific enough to settle arguments. It usually covers the audience, the category the brand competes in, the promise it makes, the proof behind that promise and the personality it shows. Without it, a brand gets decided one project at a time, by whoever is in the room, and the result drifts.

Strategy comes before design because it changes what the design must do. A school moving upmarket and a school defending its fees need different identities even if the logo brief sounds identical. The strategy is also the document a new hire, a printer or a web developer can read to understand what is and is not on brand.

Example

A family-run jewellery label decides its strategy is heritage craft for a new generation of buyers. That one line shapes the logo, the photography, the packaging and what the shop assistants say.
