Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the work of making a website easy for search engines to crawl, understand and index, and fast and stable for visitors. It covers site structure, sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects, mobile usability, page speed and structured data.

In practice

What it means when you are the one making the decision.

It is the foundation that content and links build on. If important pages cannot be crawled, are duplicated without clear canonicals, or load slowly, great writing will not reach the people searching. Typical checks include one clean URL per page, a current sitemap, working redirects, sensible heading structure and no accidental blocking.

Technical SEO is ongoing, not a one-off fix. Site changes, new pages and platform updates can create problems, so regular checks in Google Search Console are part of looking after a site.

Example

A site that redesigns its pages without redirecting the old addresses loses search visibility. A redirect map and a fresh sitemap fix the problem.
