# Rebrand, refresh or leave it alone?

Most businesses that think they need a rebrand need less. Often the name is fine and the paint is old. Sometimes the right answer is to leave the look alone and fix what surrounds it.

A rebrand feels like progress. It is also one of the most disruptive things a business can do to itself: signboards, printed stock, listings, vehicles, uniforms, the website, the name in people's heads. Done for the right reason it is worth all of that. Done because the old logo is bored of itself, it is a costly way to learn that the problem was somewhere else.

So start with three questions before any design. Has the business changed, or has only the paint aged? Do customers already recognise what you have? And what would they lose if it vanished tomorrow? The answers usually point to one of three paths.

## Three options side by side

Leave it, refresh it or rebrand

| Question | Leave it | Refresh | Rebrand |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Typical sign | Customers know you. The look is dated but consistent. | The business is the same but the look feels tired or inconsistent. | The business has changed: new market, new offer, a merger, a bad reputation. |
| What changes | Nothing in the mark. Fix the surroundings: files, listings, photography. | Colours, type, layouts and the logo cleaned up while the idea stays. | Position, name or mark, sometimes all three. |
| What stays | Everything. | The name, the idea and the recognisable shape of the mark. | Very little, by design. |
| Main risk | Staying put while the real problem remains. | A half-change that satisfies nobody. | Losing the recognition you already earned. |
| Size of effort | Small. | Medium. | Large, with a long tail of replacing things. |

The distinction is worth having by name. The glossary entry on [rebrand and refresh](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/rebrand-vs-refresh) draws the line; the practical difference is whether the idea changes or only its dress.

## Reasons that justify a rebrand

- The business now does something materially different from what the name and look still say.
- A merger, a split or a legal change means two identities have to become one, or one has to become two.
- You are moving into a market where the current look works against you, such as from local retail to a national online brand.
- **The name itself is the problem:** it is hard to say, easy to confuse, or claimed by someone else. Check this early with the [trademark basics guide](https://www.ingenioushub.com/notes/trademark-basics-before-you-design-a-logo-in-india).
- The reputation under the old name is damaged and a clean start is the honest option.

## Reasons that do not

- The logo looks old. Age is a reason to refresh, not to start over.
- A competitor changed theirs. Their reasons are not yours.
- You are bored of it. Customers see it far less than you do.
- Sales are down. Check the offer, the price, the website and the follow-up first. A new logo does not fix a slow reply.
- A new owner or manager wants a fresh start. That is a fair feeling and a poor business case.

## What a change really costs

The design is the visible part. The rest is a list of things that carry your old look, and each one has to be found and replaced: the board over the shop, vehicles, uniforms, bills and stationery, packaging stock, the website and its images, social profiles, the Google listing, directory entries, email signatures. Our [rebranding checklist](https://www.ingenioushub.com/notes/rebranding-checklist) walks through them in order. Count them before you decide. If the list is long and the benefit is small, a refresh or a tidy-up is the better trade.

## A middle road: fix consistency first

Many tired brands are really inconsistent brands. The mark is fine, but nobody has the right files, the colours differ between the board and the website, and every supplier makes a new version. Gather the files, write down the colours and type, and set a rule for the clear space around the mark. Then see how you feel. The [brand health check](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/brand-health-check) shows where the gaps are in a few minutes.

## Three situations, and what usually fits

These are made-up examples, to show how the choice works in practice.

- A family-run sweet shop has the same name and the same sign for twenty years, and the board is faded. The business has not changed. Leave the name and the idea, refresh the board and the packaging, and keep every other thing customers recognise.
- A coaching centre started with one subject and now teaches five, in two cities, under a name that still says the first one. The business has changed and the name has not caught up. This is a reasonable case for a rebrand, with the old name kept as a link for a while.
- A clinic's website, board and prescription pad all look different, though the logo itself is fine. Nothing needs redrawing. Gather the files, fix the colours and the type, and the clinic will look like one place.

## How to ask the question inside your team

**Put three pieces of material on one table:** the board or the packaging, the website, and a recent social post. Ask each person to say, in one sentence, what the business is. If the sentences agree, the look is not the problem. If they differ, the problem is positioning, and no logo will fix it. Do this before you talk to anyone who sells design, including us.

[Positioning](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/positioning): Positioning is the place a brand holds in a buyer's mind compared with the alternatives.

## When we are not the right choice

If what you really want is more enquiries and the look is not what is stopping them, a rebrand will not help and we will say so. The same goes if the budget only allows a rebrand halfway: it is better to leave the look alone than to change the logo and not the board, the website and the listings. That leaves you looking like two businesses.

**Where we are useful is the hard cases:** the business changed and the look did not follow, the name needs checking, or several things have to move together. That is the work of [brand strategy and identity](https://www.ingenioushub.com/services/branding). The [free brand audit](https://www.ingenioushub.com/brand-audit) is a good first step: it names the three things worth fixing first, and that list can be short.

Something we haven’t covered? [Ask us](https://www.ingenioushub.com/contact?from=notes-rebrand-refresh-or-leave-it-alone).

**What is the difference between a rebrand and a refresh?**

A refresh keeps the name, the idea and the recognisable shape of the mark, and updates the colours, type and layouts. A rebrand changes the position, and often the name or the mark. A refresh is smaller and safer. A rebrand is larger and justified only when the business itself has changed.

**How do I know if I should change my logo?**

Ask whether customers already recognise it and whether it still says what the business does. If both answers are yes, clean it up and leave it. If the business has changed and the logo says something else, a change is justified.

**Will a rebrand hurt my Google ranking?**

A visual change alone does not. Changing the name, the domain or the page addresses can, unless redirects, listings and links are handled carefully. If you change the name, plan the redirects before you launch.

**How long should a refreshed brand last?**

There is no fixed number. A well-made system can serve a business for many years with small updates. Change it when the business changes, not on a schedule.

**Can I refresh without changing my signboard and printing?**

You can, but plan to replace them as they wear out. Mixing old and new for a short time is normal. Mixing them for years makes the business look like two. Make a list and decide the order.
