# Personal branding for founders

When you are the product, people buy you before they buy the work. Personal branding is the habit of making that first impression clear, consistent and true.

2. Show it in three places
3. What to publish
4. Keep it honest
5. Where the business and the person meet

For a founder, a consultant, a doctor, an architect or a coach, the person is the first thing a customer looks at. A stranger checks your LinkedIn, your Google results and your Instagram, and decides in a minute whether to call. Personal branding is the work of making that minute go well. It is not self-promotion for its own sake. It is making it easy for the right people to understand what you do and to trust you.

## Start with one line

Write the single sentence you want people to repeat about you: who you help, with what, and what is different about how you do it. 'I help first-time founders turn a rough idea into a brand they can launch in a month.' It should be specific enough that someone could disagree with it. If it could fit any professional in your field, keep working. The [positioning](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/positioning) entry and the guide on [how to write a brand tagline](https://www.ingenioushub.com/notes/how-to-write-a-brand-tagline) show how to sharpen it.

[Positioning](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/positioning): Positioning is the place a brand holds in a buyer's mind compared with the alternatives.

## Show it in three places

- **Your profile:** the same photo, the same name and the same one-line description on LinkedIn, Instagram and Google. The [social profile checkup](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/social-profile-checkup) scores the basics in a couple of minutes, and the [profile picture maker](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/profile-picture-maker) crops a photo cleanly for each platform.
- **Your home on the web:** one page with who you are, what you do, proof you can show and how to reach you. It does not need to be large. It does need to load fast on a phone and say the one line clearly.
- **Your search results:** search your own name and the thing you do. Claim the profiles that appear, correct what is wrong, and make sure the first results are ones you chose.

## What to publish

Publish what your clients ask you, answered well. A founder who explains a decision, a consultant who walks through a common mistake and a doctor who answers a frequent question all show how they think, which is what a buyer is trying to judge. Choose one format you can keep up, such as a short post a week or one longer piece a month, and one place. Regular and small beats occasional and grand.

Use real photographs of yourself and your work, taken in decent light. A clean, honest portrait works better than an over-edited one. If you have permission to show client work, show it with context. If you do not, describe the problem and what you did, without names.

## Keep it honest

- Claim only what you could prove in a meeting. No numbers, awards or client names you cannot back up.
- Do not borrow someone else's words or photographs.
- Keep your business and your personal opinions separate on purpose. Decide what you will and will not post about, and stay with it.
- Update when things change. An old title or an old phone number does more harm than a blank space.

## Where the business and the person meet

If you run a company, decide how the founder's brand and the company's brand relate. A founder-led brand can open doors quickly, but it makes the company depend on one person. A company brand is easier to hand over but slower to build trust. Many small businesses use both, with the founder as the face and the company as the promise. The entry on [founder branding](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/founder-branding) explains the choice, and our note on [startup branding on a small budget](https://www.ingenioushub.com/notes/startup-branding-india-small-budget) covers what to do first and what can wait.

[Founder branding](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/founder-branding): Founder branding is building a public reputation for the person behind a business through consistent writing, speaking and presence on platforms such as LinkedIn.

Press and recognition come later and from real work. A short, accurate biography, a good photo and a clear way to reach you are what a journalist or organiser needs, and you can prepare them now. ## More on this topic.

Something we haven’t covered? [Ask us](https://www.ingenioushub.com/contact?from=notes-personal-branding-for-founders-and-consultants).

**Do I need personal branding if I have a company brand?**

Often yes, because people check the person before they trust the company. The two should say the same thing, with the founder as the face and the company as the promise.

**Which platform should a consultant use?**

The one where your buyers already look. For many Indian professionals that means LinkedIn and Google first. Choose one place you can keep up and do it regularly.

**How often should I post?**

Often enough to be seen as active and rarely enough to be good. A short post each week or a longer piece each month, kept up for a year, beats a burst and a silence.

**Do I need a personal website?**

A single clear page that says who you are, what you do, shows proof and gives a way to reach you is enough. It should load fast on a phone.

**Can I use a stock photo as my profile picture?**

No. A real, clear photograph of you builds trust. Use decent light, a plain background and a natural expression.
