# How to write a brand tagline

A tagline is a promise or a point of view in a few words. It works when a stranger can repeat it and a customer can check it.

People often ask for a tagline when they really need to decide what the brand stands for. The words are the last step. If you cannot say in one sentence who the business is for and why it is the better choice, no line will fix that. Start with the [brand strategy and positioning](https://www.ingenioushub.com/services/branding), then write the line.

[Brand strategy](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/brand-strategy): Brand strategy is the long-term plan for how a business wants to be perceived and chosen.

## What a tagline is, and is not

- **A descriptor says what you are:** Sweets and snacks, Jaipur. It is plain and useful on a signboard.
- A tagline makes a promise or takes a stance: it should still be true in five years.
- A campaign slogan belongs to one season or one offer and is allowed to change.

## Five patterns that work

The examples are for made-up businesses, so you can see the shape without copying anyone.

- **The promise:** names the benefit the customer gets. For example, for a sweet shop: Fresh every morning.
- **The stance:** says what the brand believes. For a tutoring centre: Understand it first, then memorise it.
- **The contrast:** sets you against the usual way. For a clinic: Time to listen, not a queue.
- **The place or craft:** roots the brand. For a block-print label: Printed by hand in Bagru.
- **The invitation:** speaks to the customer. For a cafe: Stay a little longer.

## A method that works for a small business

- **Write the brand in one plain sentence:** who it is for, what it does and why it is the better choice.
- List the three words customers would use to describe the best thing about you. Ask a few real customers if you can.
- Write twenty lines without judging them. Use short words. Cut anything that could belong to any business.
- Keep the five you could say with a straight face to a customer.
- Run the tests below and choose one.

## Tests to run before you print it

- **The say-it test:** say it aloud in a shop voice. If it sounds stiff, it is.
- **The proof test:** can the business keep the promise on its worst day? If not, soften it.
- **The swap test:** put a competitor's name in front of it. If it still works, it is too generic.
- **The sign test:** does it fit and read at a distance on a board or a bill? Check it with the [signboard letter height tool](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/signboard-letter-height).
- **The language test:** does it mean something unintended in Hindi, in English or in the local dialect? Ask two people who speak differently.
- **The search test:** search the exact line. If another business already owns it, choose another.

## Common mistakes

Buzzwords such as quality, excellence and innovation say nothing. Puns that need explaining do not work on a signboard. A line that promises the best, the cheapest and the fastest at once is not believed. A tagline that is longer than the name is a paragraph.

## Where it goes

Use it under the logo, on the signboard if it fits, in your WhatsApp and Google descriptions, and in your first line on social profiles. Do not change it every year. A tagline earns its meaning through repetition. **Does every business need a tagline?**

No. A clear name and a good descriptor are enough for many small businesses. A tagline helps when the name does not say what you do, or when you want to take a clear position.

**How long should a tagline be?**

As short as you can make it while keeping the meaning, usually three to seven words. If it needs a comma and a clause, it is probably two ideas.

**Should a tagline be in English or Hindi?**

In the language your customers think in. Many Indian brands use English for the name and a local-language line for warmth, or the reverse. Test both with real customers.

**Can I use a line I found online?**

Not without checking that it is not already used and protected by another business. Search for it, and ask a professional about trademarks before you print it widely.

**How is a tagline different from a slogan?**

A tagline belongs to the brand and is meant to last. A slogan belongs to a campaign and is meant to change.
