# Claim your Google Business Profile in India

For most local businesses the Google Business Profile is the first thing a customer sees. Claiming it takes minutes. Completing it properly is what makes it work.

When someone searches for a shop, a clinic, a school or a studio near them, Google shows a box with a name, a rating, a phone number and a map. That box is your Google Business Profile, and it is shown whether or not you ever set it up. Claiming it means you decide what it says.

## Step one: find out whether a listing already exists

Search Google Maps on your phone for your business name and the area. Many Indian businesses already have a listing that was created from public data or by a customer. If it exists, claim it instead of making a second one. Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse customers, and Google may merge or suspend them.

## Step two: claim and verify

Open the listing, choose the option to claim or manage it, and sign in with a Google account that the business will keep for years, not a personal account of one employee. Google then asks you to verify that you really run the place. The ways it offers vary by business and over time, and can include a video, a call, a text or a postcard, so follow what the screen offers. If the first option fails, try another rather than creating a new listing.

## Step three: fill in every field properly

- **Name:** exactly the name on your signboard and your bills. Adding keywords or a location to the name is against Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
- **Category:** pick the most specific main category, then a few extra ones that are really true. The main category matters most for what searches you appear in.
- **Address and map pin:** write the address the way a delivery person would find it, and drag the pin to your entrance. If customers do not visit you, set a service area instead and hide the address.
- **Hours:** set normal hours, then add special hours for festivals and holidays before they arrive. A wrong opening time is the quickest way to lose a customer's trust.
- **Phone and website:** one phone number you answer, and the website address with a tracking tag so you can see visitors in your analytics.
- **Services or products:** list what you actually sell, in plain words and with a line of description for each. Add prices only if you will keep them current.
- **Description:** say what you do, who for and where, in a few honest sentences. No offers, links or phone numbers in it.
- **Photos:** your logo, the outside of the premises so people can find the door, the inside, your team at work and your products. Real photos win over polished ones.

## Step four: reviews

Reviews are what customers read first. Ask every happy customer, soon after you served them, using your review link. You can turn the link into a QR code with the [QR code generator](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/qr-code-generator) and put it on the counter and the bill. Do not offer a reward for a review and do not ask only happy customers, because Google's rules forbid both. Reply to every review, kindly, including the bad ones. The [review reply helper](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/google-review-reply-helper) gives you a calm starting point.

[QR code](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/qr-code): A QR code is a square pattern that a phone camera reads to open a link, such as a WhatsApp chat, a Google review page or a website.

## Step five: keep it alive

- Post an update, an offer or a festival greeting regularly, because a profile that is updated looks open for business.
- **Check the profile once a month:** hours, phone, new photos, new reviews and any edit a stranger may have suggested.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical on your website, your WhatsApp Business profile, your social pages and the directories. Mismatches weaken trust in all of them.
- Answer messages and calls quickly. A listing that brings calls you miss is worse than none.

## Common mistakes

Keyword-stuffed names, a wrong main category, a pin that points to the next lane, festival hours left unset, a personal Gmail as the only owner, and a second listing made because the first claim was hard. Each one is fixable, and each costs customers while it stays.

## More on this topic.

Something we haven’t covered? [Ask us](https://www.ingenioushub.com/contact?from=notes-how-to-claim-and-complete-a-google-business-profile-in-india).

**Is a Google Business Profile free?**

Yes. Creating, claiming and managing a profile costs nothing. Be cautious of anyone who charges to list you, because the listing is free and you can claim it yourself.

**How long does verification take?**

It depends on the method Google offers for your business. Some options finish within minutes, and others take days. Follow the steps on the screen and do not create a duplicate while you wait.

**Can I list a business I run from home?**

Yes, if customers do not visit you, you can hide the address and set the areas you serve instead. Do not show a home address if you do not welcome visitors.

**Can I rank higher by putting keywords in my business name?**

No, and it can get the profile suspended. Use your real name. Rank improves with the right category, complete information, steady reviews and a good website.

**Who should own the profile?**

The business, not one employee. Use a Google account the business controls, and add a second manager so you can recover access if someone leaves.
