# Choosing a digital marketing agency in India

Most agencies sound the same in the first meeting. The differences show up in what they will actually do, who does it and what you are left holding when you stop.

Choosing a digital marketing agency is mostly a problem of comparison. Every proposal says growth, leads and ROI. Very few say which tasks will be done in which week, by whom, and what you will be able to see. This guide gives you the questions that make the proposals comparable, and the signs that a pitch is thinner than it sounds.

## Start with what you need, not with the agency

Write down the one result you want in the next six months, in your own words. More walk-in enquiries, more online orders, more bookings, fewer wasted calls. An agency can only be judged against a goal. If you cannot name one, begin with a short audit of where you stand. The [brand health check](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/brand-health-check) and the [Google listing self-check](https://www.ingenioushub.com/tools/google-listing-check) take a few minutes each and show whether the problem is traffic, trust or the page people land on.

Be honest about what marketing cannot fix. If the product is unclear, the price is wrong or the phone goes unanswered, more traffic only makes that more expensive. A good agency will tell you so before it takes the money.

## Questions that separate agencies

- What exactly will you do each month? Ask for the list of tasks, not the list of services. 'Manage social media' is a service. 'Eight posts, two reels, replies within a day and a monthly report' is a scope.
- Who does the work? Ask who will be on your account, whether they are employees or freelancers, and whether the person pitching is the person you will speak to.
- How will we know it is working? Ask which numbers they will report, where those numbers come from and how often. Reports should come from tools you can open yourself, not only from slides.
- What do I own? The advertising accounts, the analytics, the website logins, the social handles and the files should be in your name from day one. An agency that holds them can hold you.
- What happens if we stop? Ask for the notice period, the handover and how your accounts are returned.
- Which of your clients is like me? You want the nearest example, with the context, not the biggest logo. Ask what they would do differently if they started again.

## How to read what they send

A proposal should say what you get, in what order, for what period, and what is not included. Look for the three things that are most often missing: who pays the advertising platforms (the budget you spend on ads is normally separate from the agency's fee), what the minimum commitment is, and what a first month looks like. If a quote is one line with a total, it is not yet a proposal.

Compare scopes, not totals. Two quotes at the same price can hold very different work, and two quotes at different prices can hold the same work. Put the tasks in two columns and see what is missing from each. Our guide to [what performance marketing fees cover in India](https://www.ingenioushub.com/notes/performance-marketing-fees-india) explains the usual fee structures and what is normally included.

[Performance marketing](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/performance-marketing): Performance marketing is paid promotion where results are tracked and judged against measurable outcomes, such as enquiries, sign-ups or sales, not impressions.

## Red flags in the first meeting

- A guaranteed result, such as a ranking position, a number of leads or a return on ad spend. Nobody controls the search engines or the auction, and a promise like that is a sales line.
- No questions about your business. An agency that starts with its own deck has not yet looked at you.
- Vague talk of 'viral' or 'brand awareness' with no way to measure it.
- Pressure to sign this week for a discount that appears only for you.
- Accounts in the agency's name, or a refusal to give you access to your own data.
- **Case studies with no context:** no starting point, no period, no explanation of how the result was measured.

## Marketing and brand are one job

Ads send people to something. If the logo, the website, the listing and the ad say different things, the money buys confusion. This is the studio's central argument: brands are won on coherence, not budget. It is why we build the brand, the website and the marketing in one team. Whoever you choose, ask how they will keep the message the same across the ad, the page and the shop.

It also helps to know the words. [Performance marketing](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/performance-marketing), [CAC](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/cac), [ROAS](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/roas) and [attribution](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/attribution) are the four terms that most often hide a weak answer. If an agency cannot explain them in a sentence, you have learned something.

[CAC](https://www.ingenioushub.com/glossary/cac): Customer acquisition cost, or CAC, is what a business spends on average to win one new customer.

## A simple way to decide

Shortlist two or three. Give each the same one-page brief and the same questions. Ask for a small paid first step, such as an audit or a one-month trial with a clear scope, before a long contract. Pick the one whose answers were most specific, whose reports you could open yourself and whose people you would be happy to call on a bad day. If you would like us to be one of the two or three, [send a short brief](https://www.ingenioushub.com/contact), and we will say plainly if we are not the right fit.

Something we haven’t covered? [Ask us](https://www.ingenioushub.com/contact?from=notes-how-to-choose-a-digital-marketing-agency-in-india).

**How long should I commit to a digital marketing agency?**

Long enough to learn something and short enough to leave. Many engagements begin with a few months because ads and content need time to show a pattern. Avoid a long lock-in before you have seen the reports, and ask what the notice period is.

**Should I pay the ad budget to the agency or to the platform?**

Prefer to pay the platform directly from an account in your name, and pay the agency only its fee. That way you can see the real spend and keep the account if you leave.

**Can an agency guarantee Google rankings or leads?**

No. Rankings and ad results depend on things no agency controls. A guarantee is a warning sign. Ask instead what they will do each month and how they will report it.

**What should a monthly marketing report contain?**

The goal you set, the numbers that move it, what was done, what was learned and what happens next month. It should come from tools you can open yourself, and it should say plainly when something did not work.

**Is a small local agency better than a large one?**

Neither is better by size. Judge on who will do your work, how close the nearest example is to your business and how clearly they answer the questions above.
